Welcome to KS1! We are children aged 5-7. There are three classes: year 1, year 1/2 and year 2. In the mornings we have Maths and English lessons with our class. In the afternoons we study different Topics and do lots of exciting things. All children in Years 1 and 2 follow a broad and balanced curriculum. We provide our children with new and exciting opportunities to widen their learning experiences, capturing their interests and making each day challenging and engaging. Teaching the basic skills of English and Mathematics is our first priority. We encourage pupils to use these skills independently in all aspects of school life. In addition to the core subjects we offer a rich and varied curriculum around the following subjects: RE, ICT, Geography, History, Physical Education, Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education, French, The Arts – Music, Art and Design Technology and Science. These subjects are taught individually, or as part of The Creative Curriculum, which we call our Topics of learning. Pupils have many opportunities to develop higher order and thinking and questioning skills. The children are encouraged to work individually, in a group or as a whole class. Co-operative teaching and learning styles are used. We believe that a good attitude to work and consistent effort are important for children to achieve their targets. We value the importance of parents’ involvement and the impact it has on their child’s learning. We use a variety of schemes and methods to teach children to segment and blend sounds to help them to read. We use Phonics Bug, letters and sounds, Nessi learning and clicker 5 resources to help teach phonics from Reception upwards. Please help your child by listening to them read every day. Children are given levelled reading books from pre level 1 to level 6, from a variety of reading schemes and popular authors. We are a school that is passionate about teaching children to read. We expect children to read several times a week and for it to be marked in their reading diary in the infants and planners in KS2. We are grateful for your support in this area
